Admissions Policy

  1. Purpose:Krugerlaan School is a Special School that follows the Technical Occupational Curriculum (TOC), catering for learners with Mild Intellectual Disabilities (MID). This admissions policy ensures fair access to the school, in line with the South African Schools Act, the Education White Paper 6 on Special Needs Education, and principles of inclusive education.
  2. Admission Criteria:To be eligible for admission, learners must meet the following criteria:
  • Diagnosis of MID: A formal diagnosis of Mild Intellectual Disability (MID) must be provided by a qualified professional (e.g., educational psychologist, medical practitioner, or psychiatrist) through an a psycho-educational report.
  • Learning Needs: The learner must demonstrate the need for specialized education, supported by recommendations from the district-based support team (DBST) and school-based support team (SBST).
  • Age Requirements: Learners are admitted from the age of 13 ( the year the child turns 14) .
  • Language of Instruction: Instruction is offered in both Afrikaans and English. While preference is given to learners whose home language aligns with these, accommodations may be made where possible.

  1. Application Process:The admissions process involves the following steps:
  • District-Based Support Team (DBST) Recommendation: The DBST will ensure that placement at Krugerlaan School is appropriate for the learner’s needs.

Application must be made to the Sedibeng East District department. The district department will assess the applicant and award admission accordingly. If and when the application is successful, the district department will issue a placement letter and refer the learner for admission to Krugerlaan School.

  • Application Form: Parents or guardians must complete the school’s application form, available at the school office. Take note Application form only to be completed after successful placement made through the Department of Education.
  • Submission of Documents: The following must accompany the application form:
    • Certified copy of the learner’s birth certificate.
    • Copy of Parent ID.
    • Psycho-educational or medical report confirming relevant diagnosis .
    • Last available academic report.
    • Proof of residence.
    • Relevant medical or therapeutic reports (e.g., speech or occupational therapy reports).
  1. Selection Process:
  • Admission depends on the learner’s educational needs and the availability of resources and space.
  • Krugerlaan School does not discriminate based on race, gender, religion, or socio-economic status.
  1. Class Size and Resource Consideration:Due to the specialized nature of the education provided, Krugerlaan School maintains small class sizes to ensure individualized attention. Admissions are subject to availability of resources and space to support each learner effectively.
  2. Support Services:Krugerlaan School provides support services including counselling and psycho-social support. Parents are expected to collaborate with these services to ensure their child’s holistic development.
  3. Parental Involvement:Parental engagement is key to the learner’s success. Upon admission, parents must participate in regular meetings regarding the learner’s progress and contribute to the development and review of their Individual Support Plan (ISP).
  4. School Fees:Krugerlaan School is a fee-paying institution. School fees are determined annually by the School Governing Body (SGB). Parents are expected to meet the fee requirements, and arrangements for payment plans can be discussed where necessary. Financial assistance may be available for qualifying families, and the school will assist with applying for any relevant social grants.
  5. Non-Discrimination Policy:In compliance with South African law, Krugerlaan School upholds a policy of non-discrimination. All learners are entitled to equal access to education, regardless of race, gender, religion, or socio-economic status.
